Coaches Guidelines
Congratulations on being selected as a coach for Pacer Junior Baseball!
The league and board hope you enjoy your experience.
We will strive to provide you with coaching tools and access to clinics to enhance your knowledge of the game, coaching our youth, and your own enjoyment.
If you have questions or could use some help, contact your commissioner who will help if possible or pass the information along to the board.
We Feel a Coach’s Main Duties Are:
- To make the baseball experience a fun and rewarding one for all players on your team.
- To provide a safe environment for your players to build their skills.
- To teach all your players as equally as possible about the game of baseball and in so doing, and where possible, about themselves and the world around them.
- To understand that you are teaching young players who, no matter their current level of baseball expertise, will change and mature, and need to be provided with the tools and confidence to grow into a better athlete and solid citizen.
- To understand that you are not just a coach, but will at different times and to varying degrees become a counselor, friend, and substitute parent.
- To have a team full of players at the end of the season who want to play again the following year.
With that in mind we have established the following guidelines that we encourage you to follow as you coach your team this season.
Minimum Playing Time
- Junior Baseball minimum time is 6 defensive outs (2 full innings).
- For all Midget level teams we feel Pacer JBO teams should adhere to a minimum playing time of 3 innings, that players should average more than 3 innings per game during the course of the season, and that all should have the opportunity to play a complete game a few times during the season.
- Likewise for all National level teams whether Midget, Junior, or Senior, the minimum playing time should be 3 innings, players should average more than 3 innings per game during the season, and that all should have the opportunity to play a complete game a few times during the season.
- All other levels should strive to avoid having any player play only the minimum and we encourage you to adhere to a 3 inning minimum.
Positional Variety
- All players at the Midget level should play both infield and outfield on a regular basis.
- All players at the National level (Midget, Junior, & Senior) should play both infield and outfield on a regular basis.
- All other levels should strive to give players the opportunity to learn and develop at a variety of positions.
- All levels should strive to develop as many pitchers as possible. Do not rely on just a few kids to carry you through the season.
Season End - Playoffs
- If you are in a county or state playoff game at the end of the season and have been adhering to these guidelines our hope is that you will have a team full of self-assured, capable players in whom you have confidence and that you can continue to follow these guidelines.
- While Pacer JBO strongly encourages our coaches to allow each player at least 3 innings, the JBO minimum of 2 innings (6 outs) will formally apply in county and state playoff games.
Closing
- We understand that part of the reason you are coaching is to support your own child, but by being a coach, you are also in a position where you should support every player on your team.
- We hope you can work towards fairness in playing time and positional variety so that at the end of the year you have a team full of kids who have all improved and all want to keep playing the game of baseball.
Coaching Clincs
No Coaching Clinics are scheduled at this time.
Umpires
Over the past 5 years, Pacer JBO has used Sports Umpire Association as our main supplier of quality baseball umpires. Ed and Barbie Smith do an outstanding job. This year is no different as we are continuing our relationship. Sticking with last years success, SUA will be using Reftown (www.Reftown.com) to manage all games and schedules. All 2008 coach will automatically be receive an email from the Reftown system once our scheduled have been loaded. Additional coaches can be added by sending a request to baseball@pacerjbo.org. The Reftown system contains the details of date, time, location and umpire coverage for each Lakeridge home game. Please pay close attention as it is the coaches responsibility to make sure that their games are covered. Additional details for each game can be found by logging into the system.
Canceling or Postponing Games
Living in Oregon adds a certain challenge to any baseball program as the weather is a major factor. We are always hopeful for a good year, but it's inevitable that games will need to be canceled or postponed by inclimate weather or unsafe field conditions. Everyone works hard to get as many games played as possible, but please consider the following when determining if a game should be played:
- Are the fields open? Call the city hotline at 503-635-0239 after 3:00pm for updates. Rarely will the city close a field, so its up to the coaches to make the call.
- Are the playing conditions safe for the kids?
- Thunder or lightning (cancel the game immediately and seek shelter)?
- Is additional bad weather predicted?
- Will the field be damaged? Getting a game in at the cost of the field doesn't help anyone.
It is very important to make a decision on playability as early in the day as possible in order to give the players, parents, umpires and opposing team plenty of notice. A 2:00pm decision should be the goal for all games. Upon canceling a game, please do the following:
- Notify the opposing coach/team.
- Cancel the umpires by calling Michael Grothe at 971-533-5167 - Pacer JBO is charged if cancelled after 4:00pm on a game day.
- Schedule a make-up game date (see below)
Reschedule a Game/Requesting a Game Field
It is inevitable that we will need to reschedule games throughout the season. In order to make it as easy on the coaches, parents and players as possible, please use the following steps to request a new field:
- Refer to the master field calendar to see when space is available.
- Send an email to FieldRequest@Pacerjbo.org formally requesting a field. Please specify home team name, opposing team name, field, date and time. All fields will be given out on a first come, first serve basis.
- A confirmation email will be sent within 24 hours of request. The field is not committed until after you've received a confirmation email to your request, so please be careful when communicating to the opposing team.
- Umpires will automatically be assigned, but should be verified via Reftown.
Field Maintenance and Parks
We have worked incredibly hard on our fields this year, as well as the extra efforts from the city. Please keep the following in mind in order to keep them healthy:
- Leave the fields better than when you arrived. Instill pride within our teams.
- Drag the fields at the end of each game or practice so it's ready for the next team. The combination to the WP tractor is 4-15-25.
- Hand rake the base paths and pitching mound at Waluga Park.
- Only use approved materials on the field (Turface) - Never use kitty litter or warning track clay on the infield. You should postpone your game if you cannot make the field playable with 3 bags or less of Turface. More than that is bad for the field and costly for the league ($12/bag).
- Pay attention to the weather - Don't damage the field just to get a game in.
Contact Pat Andrew (pandrew@cecrushers.com) directly for safety, supplies or general field questions or issues. Issues with the field lights can be reported directly to the city's park ranger at (971)563-8059.
2008 Field Permits
Here is a list of the fields that our organization holds permits with the city. Many of the fields are shared with LO Little League, LO JBO and the high school programs, so the permits are only a guideline.

- Waluga Park #2 (Small field)
